How much does drain cleaning cost in Louisville?
The short answer
Most drain cleaning in Louisville is a flat-rate job in the low-to-mid hundreds. Clearing one bathroom sink drain with a cable is $200–$300, a branch line serving a kitchen sink or tub is $200–$300, and a clogged toilet is $100–$200. Main-line work costs more: running a cable down the main through an existing outside cleanout is $300–$400, and $500–$600 if we have to cut in access and evaluate the line with a camera. Hydro jetting, for lines that keep backing up, starts at $400–$500 for a single fixture and runs $600–$700 for a main or branch line with a camera. Which one you need depends on where the clog is and whether it keeps coming back.
"Drain cleaning" is one of those phrases that covers about six different jobs, which is why homeowners get quoted numbers that are hundreds of dollars apart for what sounds like the same call. The honest version: one clogged sink is a small, flat-rate job. A main line that backs up into the basement is a bigger one. Here's how the pricing actually sorts out, and how to tell before anyone shows up which job you have.
What drives the price
Three things move the number: which drain is clogged, how we have to reach it, and whether this is the first time or the fourth.
- One fixture, easy access A single bathroom sink cleared with an electric snake is $200–$300. A clogged toilet we can clear from the bowl is $100–$200. These are the everyday calls, and they're the cheapest work we do on a drain.
- A branch line serving a kitchen sink or tub When the clog is past the fixture and down in the branch drain, clearing that line with a cable is $200–$300. Kitchen branches are the usual suspect here because years of grease narrows the pipe long before anything actually stops.
- The main line, through an existing cleanout If every drain in the house is slow or backing up, it's the main. Running a cable down it through an outside cleanout is $300–$400. The cleanout is doing you a favor: it's the fast, clean way in.
- The main line, with no cleanout Plenty of older Louisville homes never got an accessible cleanout. When we have to cut in access, pull the line, and evaluate it with a camera, that job is $500–$600. Same clog, harder job, and worth asking about up front so the number doesn't surprise you.
- A toilet that has to come up Sometimes the blockage is lodged in the toilet's trap and won't clear from the bowl. Pulling the toilet, clearing it, and resetting it is $400–$500. We'd rather clear it from the top for $100–$200, and we try that first.
- Repeat backups, not a one-time clog If the same line clogs every few months, cabling it again just resets the clock. That's where hydro jetting earns its money: $400–$500 with the mini-jetter on a single fixture or floor drain, or $600–$700 to jet a main or branch line, camera included.

What we actually see on Louisville drain calls
We pulled our own invoices for the 12 months to September 2026. About 5 of every 6 drain calls we cleared were a sink, tub, toilet, laundry drain or branch line, not the main line, and the most common single job was clearing a branch line with a cable. About 1 in 8 of those calls also needed a camera look, and hydro jetting was rare. For the drain work itself, half of those invoices came to between about $300 and $390, and about 3 in 4 landed between $100 and $400.
If the problem is one fixture, start with our drain cleaning service in Louisville. If every drain in the house is slow, or water comes up in a basement floor drain, that is the main line, and sewer line cleaning is the right call.
Snaking or jetting? The honest math
A cable punches through the clog. High-pressure water scours the pipe wall back to bare. Those are different jobs at different prices, and most of the time the cheaper one is the right one. For a single clogged drain in a line that's otherwise healthy, a snake clears it and you're done. Paying $600–$700 to blast a pipe that had one blockage in it is money you don't need to spend, and we'll say so.
Jetting is for the pipes that won't stay clear. Grease coating a whole kitchen line, or roots working into an old sewer lateral so the main backs up again every few months no matter how many times it gets cabled. In those cases, a snake buys you weeks and jetting buys you years, so the higher price is actually the cheaper path over time. If you've called somebody out for the same drain twice already, that's the conversation to have.
When a camera is worth it (and when it isn't)
A camera is not part of a routine drain cleaning, and we don't push one on a first-time clogged sink. Where it pays for itself is a main line that keeps backing up, because it tells you whether you're buying a cleaning or a repair before you spend a dollar on either. A camera inspection, mini or full, is $300–$400.
There's a Louisville-specific reason this matters. The private sewer lateral running from your house out to the MSD main belongs to you, not the utility, so anything wrong on your side of the property line is your bill. A lot of laterals in the older parts of town are still clay tile, and street-tree roots working into the clay joints are the number one cause of the main-line backups we see. Roots you clear and then keep an eye on. A collapsed joint you repair. From your bathroom they look identical, and a camera is the cheapest way to tell them apart.
When you may not need us at all
A few cases where drain cleaning is more than the situation calls for:
- One slow drain, first time A single fixture that's draining slow for the first time often comes back with a plunger, a cleaned-out pop-up stopper, or a bottle of enzyme cleaner. Try that before you book anybody.
- You were quoted jetting for one clogged sink Ask flat out whether a cable will clear it. Usually it will, for a fraction of the price. Jetting is for lines with a repeat pattern, not for a one-off clog.
- Only one fixture is affected If one drain is slow and everything else in the house runs fine, it's a local clog, not your main sewer line. That's a much smaller job than anything involving the buried lateral, so don't let it get quoted like one.
Common questions we get
Why do drain cleaning quotes vary so much?
Because the phrase covers several different jobs. Clearing one bathroom sink is $200–$300. Clearing a kitchen or tub branch line is $200–$300. Running a cable down the main through an existing cleanout is $300–$400, and $500–$600 if we have to cut in access and camera the line. Hydro jetting a main with a camera is $600–$700. Same two words, very different amounts of work, so ask which one you're being quoted.
Is hydro jetting worth the extra money?
It is when the problem keeps coming back, like grease buildup in a kitchen line or roots in a sewer lateral. A cable pokes a hole through that and buys you a few weeks; jetting strips the pipe back to bare wall and holds far longer. For a one-time clog in a single drain, it's overkill and a snake does the job for less.
Do I need a camera inspection with my drain cleaning?
For a one-off clog, no, and we won't add one. For a main line that backs up repeatedly, yes. A camera inspection, mini or full, is $300–$400, and it's the cheapest way to find out whether you're looking at a cleaning or a repair before you commit to anything bigger.
Can I just use a bottle of drain cleaner?
For a slow bathroom sink, an enzyme cleaner is a reasonable first try and it's cheap. We'd steer you away from the harsh chemical stuff on a fully blocked drain, though. It sits in the pipe against the clog, it's rough on older pipe, and it makes the job less pleasant for whoever opens that line up. If a plunger and an enzyme cleaner don't move it, that's the point to call.
How do I know if it's my main line or just one drain?
Run the test yourself: if one fixture is slow and everything else drains fine, it's local to that fixture. If multiple drains are slow, a toilet gurgles when the washer drains, or water shows up in a floor drain or tub when you flush, that's the main line and it needs a different job than a sink clog.
Who pays for the sewer line out to the street in Louisville?
You do. Louisville MSD makes the property owner responsible for the private lateral running from your house to the city main. The utility only owns the main itself, so anything on your side of the property line is on you.
Do you tell me the drain cleaning price before you start?
Yes. Every drain job here is a flat price from our price book, not an hourly meter, and we tell you the number before we start the work. If the camera shows something bigger, like a broken or root-filled line, we stop and give you that price before anything else happens.
Is drain cleaning guaranteed?
No, and we would rather say so up front. We cannot see every condition inside a pipe, so clearing a drain is not warrantied: roots, a sag in the line or a crack can bring the clog back. The price is due whether or not the clog stays gone. If clearing does not hold, a camera inspection ($300–$400) shows you why before you pay for anything bigger.
How much does it cost to clear a main sewer line in Louisville?
Through an existing outside cleanout, $300–$400. If there is no cleanout and we have to make access and check the line with a camera, $500–$600. Hydro jetting a main line with a camera is $600–$700.
